Dynamo Retail Group is a leader in the bicycle retail industry, supporting over 840 stores across the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. The company operates under two well-known brands: Bike Totaal, which focuses on customers directly, and Dynamo Retail Service, a purchasing cooperative. Dynamo strongly believes in empowering entrepreneurs, helping them with their business operations, and acting as a link between customers, retailers, and suppliers to align supply with demand. With ecommerce being a key part of their strategy, Bike Totaal’s website is often the first stop for many customers on their journey, frequently leading them to an in-store visit to find the perfect bike fit.

Dynamo’s setup reflects a deep understanding of the industry, connecting all the dots between online and offline experiences to make things as seamless as possible for their customers.

The Challenge

Facing the limits of outdated systems

Before using KatanaPIM, Dynamo Retail Group struggled with product information management for their Bike Totaal products. Their old system required a lot of manual work, like adding images for each GTIN code, which really slowed things down. This setup made it tough for them to categorize products efficiently, impacting both their time-to-market and overall team productivity.

These challenges became even bigger when they merged two brands and launched a new website. As they moved toward a composable commerce approach, they knew they needed a PIM solution that could easily integrate with their new setup and make data management a lot simpler.

On top of that, Dynamo’s outdated ecommerce system was holding them back. Manual processes were the norm, which made it hard to streamline data flow and keep up with the demands of scaling up.

Product information management took too much time and wasn’t efficient. Our previous setup didn’t give us the tools to enrich products quickly. We needed more freedom in categorization and handling specifications.

The way Kega integrated KatanaPIM’s data into our website makes it easy for our customers to find exactly what they’re looking for, with relevant filters and product details. With Alumio handling the data flow between KatanaPIM and our other systems, we’ve been able to maintain consistent product information across all channels effortlessly.

The website offers detailed filters for customers to easily search and browse bikes by specifications like brand, price, and frame type. Behind the scenes, product information is managed centrally and synced in real time across all channels, ensuring accurate and up-to-date data for a seamless shopping experience.

KatanaPIM gave Dynamo Retail Group the tools to streamline their product management. The variations feature, which follows a grandparent > parent > child structure, helps them organize products with ease, allowing them to manage attributes like color, size, and even bike-specific details efficiently. This structure saves time and eliminates the need to duplicate data, letting them handle their entire product range in an organized way.

KatanaPIM is easy to use and lets us enrich content faster. The import and export module, in particular, has streamlined our operations. It’s easy for us to import basic product data on every level and export the enriched content to tools like a feedmapper. The variations feature is also really helpful. We can categorize our bikes based on attributes like size and color, which saves us time and keeps everything organized.

KatanaPIM’s specification groups feature also adds flexibility by allowing Dynamo to set specifications at the product group level. This means they can efficiently assign attributes to an entire category of products in one step, rather than manually adding each specification to individual items. This approach significantly reduces the time spent on data entry and helps maintain accuracy across product lines.

Another great functionality in KatanaPIM is the specification groups. With the specification groups, we can add specifications per product group instead of adding all the single specifications to each product.

Plans for the future

A roadmap to smarter, personalized shopping experiences

Dynamo Retail Group is focused on enhancing the shopping experience by delivering more personalized interactions for their customers. They plan to leverage online and offline data, allowing them to tailor their communications and promotions based on individual customer preferences.

In addition, they plan to make the most of KatanaPIM’s features to further optimize their operations. They are exploring tools like bulk editing, enhanced workflow capabilities and implementing AI to streamline product enrichment processes and maintain a high level of data accuracy as they continue to grow.

Our biggest project next year is working on the customer journey. We want to use our online and offline data to deliver more tailored experiences to our customers.
